We, The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), rally all FPS gamers to play by the Rules of War, which protect the humanity and dignity of people all over the world.

FIRST-PERSON SHOOTERS (FPS) ARE THE WORLD’S MOST-PLAYED VIDEO GAMEs

Every day, people play games set in conflict zones right from their couch. But right now, armed conflicts are more prevalent than ever. And to the people suffering from their effects, this conflict is not a game. It destroys lives and leaves communities devastated. Therefore, we’re challenging you to play FPS by the real Rules of War, to show everyone that even wars have rules—rules which protect humanity on battlefields IRL.

ALL GAMERS CAN PLAY BY THE RULES

Take your gaming to the next level. Play by the Rules right now by applying these tenants to your favorite FPS.

When an enemy is down and can’t respond, you can’t keep shooting at them.

Rule of War: Prisoners of war must be protected from violence, intimidation,  and ill treatment.

Bots that don’t fire unprovoked are considered civilians, and you can’t target or harm them.

Rule of War: Civilians cannot be attacked and must be protected.

In any given game map, houses, schools, or hospitals are considered safe zones that you cannot harm. When fighting in these spaces, you must do everything you can to avoid damage.

Rule of War: Civilian infrastructures are protected areas

If you have an unused med kit that works on others, you must give it to those who need it—be they friendly or enemy.

Rule of War: The sick and wounded must be cared for on both sides.

THINK YOU KNOW THE RULES OF WAR?

Expand each question to find out how the rule is defined.

  • The Rules are set up to maintain humanity in armed conflicts, ultimately reducing suffering and saving lives.

  • Civilians, aid workers, medical personnel (those not fighting) as well as injured soldiers and prisoners (those not able to fight).

  • Water sources, crops, livestock and civilian housing should not be harmed—anything key to survival for those not involved in the conflict itself.

  • The Rules of War mandate that the sick and wounded—no matter which side they’re on—have the right to be cared for.

  • The Rules state that weapons and tactics used in war must avoid excess suffering and torture of prisoners is forbidden.
